Mali has one of the most intensely musical cultures in all Africa, and among that country's greatest musicians is the guitarist Djelimady Tounkara. While he's not nearly as well known as his compatriot Ali Farka Tour�, he has been a driving force in Mali's rich music scene since the early 60s.

Djelimady's Super Rail Band is one of the most popular bands in West Africa. Founded in 1970, the band plays a Malian style of Afro-pop, but which also contains elements of Cuban music.

Recorded at Bamako's Studio Bogolan during an intense week rich in emotion, this album has allowed Djélimady Tounkara to expand his range of musical colors. Made confident by his long experience and his recent musical encounters, Djélimady has given free reign to his improvisational talent on the acoustic guitar (as well as on the electric guitar in two tracks) in a subtle and elegant fashion. A faithful guardian of the Malinké tradition, he has managed to modernize it without betraying it, endowing it with a universal tone and character. "Solon Kôno" is an album by a great, inspired guitarist, and it marks a new stage in the rich and varied history of Malian music. Released in 2005 on Marabi.
